A microbrewery or craft brewery is a brewery that produces a small amount of beer. Exact definitions vary and presently, controversy and even lawsuits exist over how to properly classify “microbrews.” (We’d rather stay out of court and in the pub, just so it’s been said.)
Such breweries are generally characterized by their emphasis on quality, flavor and brewing technique. The hallmark of craft beer and craft brewers is innovation. Craft brewers interpret historic styles with unique twists and develop new styles that have no precedent.
Craft beer is generally made with traditional ingredients like malted barley; interesting and sometimes non-traditional ingredients are often added for distinctiveness. Craft brewers have distinctive, individualistic approaches to connecting with the beer drinking community. Craft brewers maintain integrity by what they brew and their general independence, free from a substantial interest by a non-craft brewer.
The craft beer market is exploding! As of January, 2015, the U.S. had more than 4,000 breweries in operation. As of June, 2015, a new microbrewery opens every 14 hours! To illustrate the explosion further, in 1983, there were just 80 breweries in operation in the U.S. Microbrewed beers have enjoyed 17 years of double digit growth in consumption, with 2014 seeing nearly a 35 percent increase in sales, making hand crafted micro brewed beer the fastest growing retail product in the U.S.
The craft beer market is all about quality, freshness and community. Craft beer tastes much better because, unlike some others whose names we won’t mention, craft brewers spend their time focusing on the quality of their beer rather than marketing campaigns and stock prices. Craft brewers put their heart and soul, as well as lots of amazing ingredients into every beer they brew. With the number of breweries in the U.S., each brewing an average of 15 styles of beer, there seems today to be over 60,000 hand crafted beer styles available in the U.S. with no end in sight of where this product growth is going. Now 11 percent of the total beer consumption in the U.S., we predict that in a short time, hand crafted micro beer will take over 25 percent of the nearly $400 Billion annual U.S. beer market.
